The Women T20I series of Bangladesh Women against Ireland Women had some buzz with the first encounter commencing on 05th December, 2024. It is obvious that both teams will emerge as winners for this series as it helps in building up for future rivalries and most importantly showcase their skills in the shortest format of the game. Given how both the sides have played it would also be a highly awaited tie.
Ireland’s Successful Beginning
Taking a 1-0 lead in the Three-match series Ireland Women started the match by being on the backstop and finished with a 12 run victory at the end of the first competition. Ireland had the pleasure of scoring 169 runs at their maiden batting and this tally was to become a record an innings standard for teams ahead of that sole match. Ever so threatening, Leah Paul scored 79 runs from 59 balls in her first T20 international and helped Ireland to a strong comeback. Even after losing two early wickets, the skipper Gaby Lewis and Leah Paul forged a strong partnership, with Lewis scoring 52 runs.
As a result of these contributions, Ireland now has the highest score ever recorded in a Women’s International T20 match held in Bangladesh.
Though powerful, the response from Bangladesh was not enough. Bangladesh’s openers, Sobhana Mostary and Shorna Akter, set the tone early on for the home team as they helped put up a partnership of more than 100 runs between them. However, the Irish bowlers were able to contest the match as they took significant wickets at key intervals.
One of the critical factors was Orla Prendergast’s stellar performance followed by an important double wicket maiden over in the19th over. Furthermore, Aimee Maguire provided a key wicket and with the help of an incredible catch by Gaby Lewis, the dangerous Dilara Akter was taken out. Akter played a valiant innings, scoring 49 runs but Bangladesh did not manage to chase the target of 157 runs and finished their innings at 7 wickets lost.
Bangladeshi Women’s Squad and Form
Things get interesting here as the Bangladeshi Women’s team performance in the previous ODI series against Irish women, which they won convincingly, makes this series crucial for them. The series allows Bangladesh to prepare for future matches while enabling them to try out new strategies on the T20 format which presents a different test.
The team captained by Nigar Sultana also has young players like Murshida Khatun along with other experienced players including Ritu Moni and Shorna Akter. Bangladesh will look to build on their success in ODIs and learn to maneuver the shorter format quickly.
The Women’s team of Bangladesh for this series has a blend of youth and experience across its ranks. Important players like Sultana along with all-rounder Ritu Moni will be vital in leading the front of the team. Earlier this year Ireland has been beaten by women’s team in the longer format of the game but still this T20 series looks to be more challenging than it may appear to very few considering that Ireland suffered a defeat in the opening of this T20 series against Ireland.
Why This Series Is Important
This series has become popular not only because its competitive nature and for both the teams’ readiness in the T20 format, but also because it has such relevance for the experiences of the teams. Having lost the One Day International series against Bangladesh women’s team, the Ireland women’s team will be looking to bounce back stronger in the T20s and prove that they can compete with the best sides. Bangladesh on the other hand will be looking to experiment with different combinations in this series to enhance their flexibility in the T20 format and strengthen their status on the international T20 scene.
Over the next games, the series looks to be enthralling, as spectators await entertaining cricket on 7th December 2024, the next match that is scheduled to be played at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. While both the parties are looking forward to doing their best in the battle as Ireland aims to cement their lead and Bangladesh wants to level. F
ridays look desirable even without the match so let’s just say dramatic comebacks seems a good effort, with key players like Nigar Sultana in Bangladesh’s corner, while Leah Paul is expected to do well for Ireland. The excitement is never dull in cricket.
I think the series would not only be a test of the current capabilities of both teams but also chances for the unique players for proving their eligibility for the bigger international tournaments ahead. So, the objectives of the teams combined with the thrilling nature of the matches played so far have excited cricket lovers from different parts of the world.
